Don't's for Fantasy Novelists

I recently read a list on RinkWorks.com that was geared towards fantasy authors. I found it very refreshing to read an article by someone who shares my views on writing fantasy. I plan to write at least one fantasy novel myself, and I realized this list is in fact a list of things I wish to avoid when writing my novel(s). If you plan to write fantasy, please, for the sake of all serious readers and critics alike:
  1. Do not write a novel that can relate to any point in the list I wrote of above.
  2. Do not go the way of Christopher Paolini and rip off Tolkien! (Don't get me wrong, Paolini's a great writer, he's just not very original. Hate me if you want, I don't care!)
  3. Be original in your writing. Read all the Tolkien and Chronicles of Narnia you can get your hands on so you can say of it, "Oh, this is what I should try not to write like." (I love Tolkien's and Lewis's fantasy novels, that's why I encourage authors to be original and not write carbon copies of The Lord of the Rings and Narnia.)

If your looking for something to do, RinkWorks has all kinds of cool reading.
